Motorola’s Moto G73 5G was announced globally alongside the Moto G53 5G in February this year, and now the company has made it official that it will be coming to India as well. The handset is expected to debut with the new MediaTek Dimensity 930 SoC in India and it is the upgrade to the Moto G63 5G, since the Moto G72 is a 4G device. Motorola has put up a landing page on online retailer Flipkart’s website giving out details about the upcoming launch and the handset.
The landing page on Flipkart gives out the core details about the smartphone that’s heading to India, which seems to be very similar to the global variant announced earlier. Motorola claims on the landing page that its Moto G73 5G would be the first smartphone in India to be powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 930 SoC. The processor was announced in May 2022, and offers mmWave capability (which is not available in India) just like the MediaTek Dimensity 1050 SoC, which debuted alongside it. It is fabricated using the 6nm process and offers a maximum clock speed of 2.2GHz.
Flipkart’s landing page does give out a lot of details about the phone’s cameras. We know that the phone will come with two rear-facing cameras, which will include a 50-megapixel primary camera and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. Selfies will be handled by a 16-megapixel front-facing camera. Motorola claims that the primary camera offers better performance with its larger 2μm pixel size.
As per the listing, the phone appears to have a water-repellent design that is more in line with the more recent Moto G72 than the Moto G62 5G that it replaces. The phone has a 6.5-inch full-HD+ LCD panel that features a 120Hz maximum screen refresh rate. Accompanying that large display is a stereo speaker setup, which appears to have Dolby Atmos support.
The Moto G73 5G is said to run Motorola’s MyUX software skin with Android 13 as the base. Motorola also claims that the smartphone supports 13 5G bands. The phone offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and a 3.5mm headphone port in terms of connectivity. It will have a 5,000mAh battery and support 30W wired charging.
Samsung Galaxy A34 5G, Galaxy A54 5G Tipped to Launch on March 15
Samsung is thought to be working on a new line of Galaxy A series smartphones following the release of the Galaxy A14 earlier this year. These devices are expected to hit the market in the first half of 2023. Previously, the Galaxy A34 5G and Galaxy A54 5G were spotted on several certification websites. Several leaks have hinted at the designs, features, specifications, and expected prices of the upcoming smartphones. Now, a new leak has now suggested a possible release date for the two models.
Reliable tipster Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks) suggested in a tweet that Samsung could unveil both the Galaxy A34 and Galaxy A54 models on March 15. Although he noted that he “won’t vouch this one by 100 percent,” the information was provided to him by a “quite reliable source.”
The Samsung Galaxy A34 and Galaxy A54 models have been previously spotted on several certification sites hinting at their imminent launch. The Galaxy A34 was also recently spotted on Google Play Console with the chipset model MT6877V/TTZA, implying that this model will likely be powered by a Dimensity 1080 SoC, and the listing also suggested that the device will carry 6GB of RAM.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy A54 is expected to be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 1380 chipset, with 8GB of RAM and a storage capacity of up to 256GB. Both the purported devices are said to run Android 13 out of the box, with One UI 5.0 on top.
Another recent report noted that the Galaxy A34 and Galaxy A54 5G smartphones are likely to feature a similar camera module design as the recently launched flagship Galaxy S23 series. The design renders cited showed vertically aligned circular camera modules and it also hinted that the Galaxy A34 model might launch with a notch display.
Previous leaks have also suggested the expected global pricing of the Samsung Galaxy A34 and Samsung Galaxy A54 smartphones. The Galaxy A34 is said to be offered in two storage variants – 6GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB, the former of which is expected to cost between EUR 410 (roughly Rs. 36,200) and EUR 430 (roughly Rs. 38,000), while the 256GB model could cost between EUR 470 (roughly Rs. 41,500) and EUR 490 (roughly Rs. 43,300).
On the other hand, the Galaxy A54 model is reported to arrive in two storage variants – 8GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB is likely to cost between EUR 530 (roughly Rs. 46,800) and EUR 550 (roughly Rs. 48,600) for the base variant, while the 256GB model could cost between EUR 590 (roughly Rs. 52,100) and EUR 610 (roughly Rs. 53,900).
OpenAI Makes ChatGPT Available for Companies to Integrate in Apps
The company, which introduced ChatGPT to the public in November, is now offering paid access for businesses and developers who want to use the software’s ability to answer questions and generate text in their own applications and products. Customers will be able to hook their apps into ChatGPT’s application programming interface, giving them the same version of the GPT 3.5 model that OpenAI itself uses at a cost 10 times lower than OpenAI‘s existing models. Instacart, Shopify and Snap are among companies already using the ChatGPT API in their products, San Francisco-based OpenAI said in a blog post on Wednesday.
While OpenAI has generated huge public interest in the best-known artificial intelligence systems of the past year — ChatGPT, which creates text, and image generator DALL-E — the company also needs to figure out how to accelerate revenue growth and pay for the huge cloud-computing bills these massive AI models rack up. In January, OpenAI negotiated an expansion of Microsoft Corp.’s investment in the company, adding a reported $10 billion (nearly Rs. 82,400 crore). Last month, OpenAI started a waitlist for companies and developers who want to use ChatGPT in their own apps and is selling a premium version to individuals.
The AI research company acknowledged that ChatGPT has gone down too often recently and said it will prioritize companies and users running public applications on platform. “For the past two months our uptime has not met our own expectations nor that of our users,” OpenAI wrote. “Our engineering team’s top priority is now stability of production use-cases.”
Instacart, the US’s largest online grocery-delivery company, will add ChatGPT to its shopping app, blending it with Instacart’s own AI and catalog of available products. Customers will be able to ask the app to do things like suggest healthy options for kids and give instructions for how to make great fish tacos, the company said. Shopify will also use the chatbot for its consumer app — when shoppers search for a product, ChatGPT will offer recommendations.
Quizlet, an electronic learning tools company, is building an AI tutoring experience where ChatGPT’s question and answer style is used to replicate the Socratic method, said Chief Executive Officer Lex Bayer. For foreign language learning, ChatGPT can also make up a story in the language being studied and test reading comprehension, or take a vocabulary list and turn it into a paragraph.
It’s a use for the chatbot that might be more welcome to teachers, who have mostly been focused on concerns students are using it to cheat and automate homework.
“With any new technology there’s going to be some apprehension,” Bayer said. “We’re constantly pushing the bounds of technology and using it in the right way that’s really constructive for students. “
On Monday, Snap, maker of the photo-sharing app Snapchat, announced it’s also among the new ChatGPT customers, releasing an AI-enabled chatbot to Snapchat Plus members, who pay $3.99 (nearly Rs. 330) a month to subscribe. Trained to display a “unique tone and personality,” Snapchat’s My AI can be used to recommend birthday gift ideas, dinner recipes and “even write a haiku about cheese for your cheddar-obsessed pal,” the company said. It will eventually be rolled out to all Snap members.
Separately on Wednesday, OpenAI also unveiled access to its Whisper speech recognition system, which can be used for transcription.
Bill Gates Praises India’s Digital Payment System; Says This Will Be Cheapest 5G Market
The Microsoft co-founder spoke of India’s digital identity Aadhaar, its payment infrastructure, and rapid strides that the country has taken.
India’s sprawling digital public infrastructure received a glowing endorsement from billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates on Wednesday as he praised the country’s “great” digital network, reliable and low-cost connectivity, and said this will be the cheapest 5G market.
Under the G20 presidency of India, a session on ‘Building resilient and inclusive economies — the Promise of Digital Public Infrastructure’ was held on Wednesday in New Delhi, where the Microsoft co-founder spoke of India’s digital identity Aadhaar, its payment infrastructure, and rapid strides that the country has taken in bringing more people into formal banking system.
“India in particular, by laying the groundwork for digital public infrastructure starting with identity system, allows people to build on top of that. And to make financial access and financial payment an element of that in a trusted way allows for an incredible variety of applications. We are just at the beginning of this. We are seeing incredible ingenuity about using this, and it is in many different sectors,” Gates said speaking at the event.
Gates — who is the co-chair and trustee of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — said that Covid-19 across the world had demonstrated the value of digital payment systems for facilitating emergency relief payments.
“No country has built more comprehensive platform than India.. Because of the pioneering investment including creating the basic Aadhaar identity, India was in the lead in getting out (relief) payments…during the pandemic,” Gates said.
India can be “such an example” for other countries, he said.
“As I said the Indian system is more ambitious in its breath, the digital vision from the beginning included areas like helping government with its tasks, or enabling exchange of educational materials,” he observed.
Gates said that is an exciting year to showcase India’s innovations in digital public infrastructure and in other areas.
“It is fantastic that as part of this G20 Presidency, the goal of exposing people to the benefits of that and offering to help them on their journey as they adapt it to their needs, that India is standing as a leader in this,” Gates said.
He added: “We would like to see all countries, particularly developing countries, adopt these things.” Gates, who addressed the session, also spoke highly of India’s competitive private market, reliable and low-cost connectivity, the innovation landscape and went on to say this will be the cheapest 5G market.
“One thing that India has that is pretty fantastic is you have a great digital network, you have a very high percentage of people using smartphones. You have opened transactions also with feature phones,” he pointed out.
Gates said connectivity has been an enabling factor for India.
“The connectivity has been very good, it is very reliable, it is the cheapest in the world. And the same thing is going to happen in 5G. There is no doubt this will be the cheapest 5G market,” the tech icon said.
Gates felt that the India model can also be replicated in other countries provided they bring up their public infrastructure. India and Singapore last week linked the digital payment systems and that “is a very worthwhile goal”.
“If we can reduce the overhead on remittance payment even just by a few per cent that is a gigantic amount of money,” he said.
India and Singapore on earlier this month linked the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) network with Singapore’s PayNow. The UPI-PayNow linkage will enable users of the two fast payment systems in either country to make convenient, safe, instant, and cost-effective cross-border funds transfers using their respective mobile apps.
Gates said that the beauty of digital systems is that for researchers it allows unlocking of information on who is using the system but at an aggregate level and in ways that do not compromise the privacy.
“The ability to have continuous improvement to understand…Is it easy to use, does it work well in different verticals…there is far more to be done on that, including things like innovation centres that allow for that quick experimentation,” he said.
Gates said that India will have to streamline the justice system and added “if there is any delay…that is a barrier to business investments”.
Gates referred to the mobile infrastructure space saying there had been “wild competition with winners and losers” and while that was a difficult thing, the government did not pick a particular company.
“In the end, the users were beneficiaries,” he observed.
Telecom and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw termed 2023 as a landmark year, and said the digital technology has come of age.
Artificial intelligence, 5G and quantum computing have matured to become mainstream technology.
India has created unique framework for digital economy, that focuses on making a difference in people’s lives, the minister said.
“The uniqueness of India’s digital public infrastructure is that unlike many geographies where digital technology was concentrated with big tech companies, India has a public private partnership model where every stakeholder has an important role, Vaishnaw said.
He outlined India’s key initiatives such as Aadhaar, UPI, CoWin, and now the indigenous 4G/5G stack. He said India has made it a policy objective that benefits of digital technology should reach all sections of society. The minister asserted that India is happy to share its technology for the benefit of the world.
Netflix Suffers Outage, Streaming Service Down for Thousands of Users
There were around 1,800 reports on Down-detector, which collates status reports from a number of sources.
Netflix, which has more than 200 million paid subscribers globally, remains a dominant streaming service.
The streaming service last month cut prices of its subscription plans in some countries as it looked to maintain subscriber growth amid stiff competition and strained consumer spending.
Netflix, which operates in over 190 countries, has been looking to grow its share in newer international regions as the US and Canada markets saturate. The company added about 7.6 million subscribers in the fourth quarter after bleeding subscribers in the first half of 2022 as rivals such as Paramount+ and Disney+ raked in subscribers.
But average revenue per membership declined across regions in the last three months of 2022.
In February, Netlfix also laid out plans to crack down on password sharing for accounts on its streaming platform, including setting up primary location and paying a couple of dollars for an extra member.
The video-streaming giant, which has estimated that 100 million users around the world use a shared account, said that members can now easily manage who has access to their account, transfer profile to a new account and still easily watch Netflix on their personal devices or log into a new TV.
Apple Granted Embedded Face ID Patent, Tipped to Feature in iPhone 16 Series
Apple has been granted a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a next-generation feature which could replace Dynamic Island on a number of iPhone models. The notch design was introduced with the iPhone X, the Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro, while the iPhone 16 Pro is anticipated to include an embedded Face ID element just underneath the display. Although Apple has already had patents for embedded Face ID for several years and it was speculated that the technology would be included in this year’s iPhone 15, it seems unlikely to happen this year.
According to the patent application, first spotted by Patently Apple, the Cupertino tech giant Apple noted that the new invention will include a display with a front and back surface. Multiple pixel areas will give off light from the front surface to display an image, and multiple openings will carry light from the front surface to the back surface comprising the display.
This device proposed by Apple includes a camera mounted on one side of the display’s back surface. The camera is set up to take a captured image. A processor is connected to the display and the camera in the apparatus. To minimise image distortion prompted by the display, the processor is set up to accept the captured image and apply a first digital filter to the first part of the captured image and a second digital filter, different from the first digital filter, to the second portion of the captured image.
Display analyst Ross Young said that this embedded Face ID feature is likely to arrive in 2024 with the iPhone 16.
On the other hand, according to an analysis by Ming-Chi Kuo, the element would be restricted to iPhone 16 Pro models. This is coherent with Apple’s growing policy of increasing the disparity between the base and Pro models, particularly in terms of display technology. For instance, in the iPhone 14 lineup, the base models retained the notch display while the Pro models received the Dynamic Island.
Kuo’s claims were backed by a report featured in the Korean news site The Elec, which claimed that embedded Face ID will be confined to Pro models next year before making its way into base models in 2025.
